Amex Bonvoy (yearly free room covers the fee), Cobalt, Aeroplan Reserve. I hit the spend for the Companion Pass which pretty much covers the yearly fee on the Reserve too.
TD Aeroplan Visa for wherever doesn’t take Amex.
Everything on credit. Haven’t voluntarily paid with debit in 10 years lol.
Agree. The quick math would be $25k on something like a cobalt could be 125k points. On Reserve it’s 75k.
So is the difference of 50k points made up on the savings of the companion voucher + all other perks received by the reserve card? It’s really hard to say. This also assumes the entire $25k is on the highest earning tier which likely isn’t the case. So the points gap between the cards might be smaller.
Amex Bonvoy, Reserve AMEX, TD Privilege Aeroplan, (partner has) AMEX Platinum.
There’s a ton of upside just keeping certain cards and what promotions they can offer you.
If you have status for Air Canada, it can prove to be valuable to keep the Reserve AMEX
Great question! It really depends what you prefer most in terms of whatever points you collect (either Aeroplan or Marriott points).
You can check online what card is best to use depending on what you spend on (food, groceries, gas, hotel, flights, etc.). I would use my AMEX Bonvoy for hotels (provided I want to hit a certain minimum spend for another card), AMEX Reserve for flights, food, restaurant dining, and TD Aeroplan Privilege for groceries, gas.
Hope that helps!
I stopped using all Canadian cards. Moved to US cards. Better returns even after taking a hit on forex. Now use, in order of preference, Capital One Venture X, AmEx Gold (don’t use it extensively so can’t decide if I should switch to Platinum), and Citi Prestige.
- The points each dollar spent earns is better in Capital One v/s canadian cards (e.g. 2x, 5x, 10x v/s 1X or at max 2x on most Canadian cards)
- Each point is worth more (e.g. many times 15k points on Capital One would buy YYZ to LAX, while Aeroplan would buy YYZ to NYC for that - varies but this is my general experience)
- My US CitiPrestige would give me unlimited lounge entries, with unlimited guests (they recently changed it though to two I guess)
- My US AmEx and CapitalOne earn better flight credits and bonus spend reward points covering a lot more than what I pay in annual fees (Canada AmEx Plat is getting better at this)
