Is there any demand for this skill? 1. Secondary Research/ Literature Review - Ability to find & collect science facts & data from internet, analyze it and bring insights from it. And present in it very simple & consized manner. Note: Please don't call blindly this as data scientist skill. I am not only taking about quantitative data. I also talking about ability to infer facts & qualitative data.

I did it at a very senior level...but had to take a 120K pay cut at first. got back up to where i was over time (took like 4 years) but never have looked back
This might be overkill, but since you’re trying to jump disciplines, maybe include a link to a strategy portfolio in your resume. You can include past PR writing samples, and any briefs or research reports you’ve crafted. This way you’re proving you have the skill versus just including the buzz words. Most agencies at that level will ask you present a brief to their team as part of the hiring process, at least the ones I’ve been at. Good luck - I’d love to make the leap out of account at some point as well!
Thank you, super helpful!! Good luck to you, too!
You might be able to do it if you're willing to go to a small shop. No big agency will hire an account person to be a strategist unless they are willing to take a bit step back in their career.
Depends. While background is helpful, simply being around strategy isn’t the same as doing it.
For real strategy, you’ll need to take a step back, and the size of that step depends on the size of the shop. Maybe somewhere under 10 people might do it. I would hire you at the associate level with a fast track to strategist. Maybe regular strategist if your work was amazing but it would be unlikely.
For media strategy or strategy at Edelman, you could probably come in at a senior strategist level. They’re basically account people.
But even the way you’re writing about it shows me you have no idea about the skills gap you’re trying to paper over.
Thanks for your encouragement!
I’d recommend using your network for advice and opportunities. If you’re tight with any strategy directors they can help you get your foot in the door. Expect a ‘demotion’ but if you’re good, the extra experience and years will help u get promoted quickly
What does your experience look like? I don’t think you’d need to start from scratch but it might be in how you market yourself on your resume, website, in your cover letter, etc.. Remember that HR and Talent might be reading first if you’re not going through a recruiter, so lean heavily into the most strategic aspects of your previous roles!
In terms or experience, I spent 3 years at a PR agency doing mostly media relations and 3 years and digital / social - always on the account side but in roles that requires a lot of strategy chops. Good point re: how I market myself. I’ve tried to incorporate the word “strategy” into my resume as much as possible and showcase my critical thinking skills vs. solely my account management skills. I could probably revisit how I summarize my experience verbally during introductory phone chats and interviews, too!
