I’ve had this happen before - I was coming into a new snr. role, while the other individual had been with the company prior to my arrival. Both same age, same education and years of experience. I made it a factor to reach out to them for help/insight on the health of the account/clients, and cemented how we all have our roles that overlap, but that each needs the other. And always gave credit, where credit was due and needed!
And I agree with the above, seek mentorship outside of direct managers.
I’d say it depends on how you got into this position, tenure, experience, etc. If there is a gap or if one once recently promoted that could also change things.
they were recently promoted! less than 6 months in the role
Try to approach it with a mindset that you can learn from everyone. Seek mentorship outside of direct managers.
Promotions are circumstantial, as hard as it is, try not to compare based on age.
You don't have to be too formal if they were recently promoted. That's just my opinion, though.
Just do a good job and let your work speak up for itself. Make sure you are getting credit for your work, sometimes it can get mixed up.
