CIP is terrible. Have never understood why it's considered the standard. Read the chapter on Issue Trees in Case Interview Secrets. Then dive into live practice using cases from MBA case books. Kellogg, Wharton, and Ross have good, Googleable ones. Booth's is good too but harder to find electronically.
The case is just as much about communication as it is about insights. Approach it as a working session with your manager and partner to solve it together. Drive the discussion but take the hints and redirect if needed.
Wow thanks bcg1!
Any particular reason you recommend that chapter? Is that a great explanation or does BCG test that a lot?
It's the most succinct description I've seen for how to think about framing a problem. Trying to remember the right "framework" is a bad way to go about it. Just think about what issues actually drive the answer and what data you need to test a relevant hypothesis.
Victor Chang look over my shoulder was super helpful for me. There are recordings of cases. He does the same case 3 times: good, bad, and average. After you listen to enough you can see what differentiates a good case from a bad one, and it definitely helped me improve.
