Consider skipping newborn size onsies. Buy all the stuff you’d want if your kid has a fever now (baby Tylenol, thermometer, nose frida (if that’s your thing))
Name brand items like diapers and wipes. The ones from Costco or target work just as well and cost a lot less.
Babies do not need shoes!!!! Nobody cares but you if they are sporting the latest Nike or timberlands.
Buy a stroller and car seat that fits your needs, not your style. And I agree on the gender neutral colors for these types of items.
That $100 crib from IKEA works just as good as the $500 one from other stores.
We had a rocker for our first child, but I found that a nice recliner is better for sleeping in when you are holding them doing a 4 am feeding.

Agree M1. We ransacked that hospital at the beginning of every nurse’s shift. No shortage of newbie diapers here!
Toys. Don’t buy any until they are at least over a year old, maybe even older. Mine is 1.5 yr old and he isn’t interested in any of his toys. He’s more into what’s in our recycle bin like bottles, boxes etc, and what’s in our hands
Dunno about not buy, but our lives changed unbelievably much when we got a Baby Brezza. To be able to get a warm formula bottle in 10 seconds is priceless.
The new smart baby monitors cause more anxiety than they cured (we used Owlet - and cannot be more of a detractor)
I don’t know what I would do with out my diaper genie
Second to d1. Buy bare essential toys. And buy more 6 m, 12 m clothes, if you prefer use virgin coconut oil from coscto for baby massage. That's real stuff over other synthetic lab type baby oils. I don't trust J&j products after all the asbestos in talc powder problems. Don't let your wife do cute dress shopping. Mothers do get carried away when comes to dressing their little one
- Wipe warmer (can cause infections)
- Gender specific colors for everything (eg stroller, car seat, crib, ...). Will save you money if you have a kid of the opposite gender
- Diaper Genie, depending on where you live. We just use plastic grocery bags (free where I live)
- Forehead thermometer (until you have at least a toddler). Rectal is most accurate, followed by underarm. Oral and Forehead are not accurate at all for babies
Also our kids have all hated the swings that everyone gets. Some kids seem to like it though
Second the recommendation not to buy owlet we ended up a night in hospital because the connection wasn’t really good.
Also try not to buy the bassinet for your stroller, if you can borrow that’s great, but they grow out of it super fast.
Talked to my wife. Her advice is to buy only absolutely necessary items before the birth (eg, one pack of newborn diapers, one pack of size 1, some newborn onesies, get the Amazon Prime box for a free swaddle blanket and/or bottles, steal what you can from the hospital - diapers, wipes, bottles, etc... All hospital room supplies are up for grabs, and you usually can request more once you've taken what's in the room...) Think Maslow's Hierarchy. If it's not on the first level, buy as you find you need it. You may be surprised how little you actually will need.
We use Costco wipes and diapers and have been very satisfied. Triple Paste diaper rash cream is expensive (~$19 at Target), but works better for us than any other (Butt Paste, Desitin, natural brands, etc).
