McKinsey & Company Any fishes here on the McKinsey & Company Operations team? I have an interview scheduled and curious if it will be a good place for career growth. Honest opinions please.

I’m Ops, happy to connect

like

Do you want to do ops work specifically, or just be at McKinsey in general? Ops is one of the most restrictive practices - you're required to do pretty much all your work in ops, and you're required to specialize in a service line almost from the beginning. Which can all be great if you genuinely want to do ops work, but will get very frustrating if you're hoping for a more generalist experience.

likehelpfulfunny

Nope, not new. Been in the field for a few years.

It all depends on what you are coming to McKinsey Ops for. Different people get different things. I know experienced hires in Ops who hate it as they feel they are not creating impact. But for some folks the exposure to new operational problems is stimulating. McKinsey is not an easy place and I advise you have a very clear idea of what you want out of this or else you will feel crushed and it won’t be worth it.

likehelpful

I’m ops as well. Have really loved the experience, feel like I’ve learnt a ton in the last 2 years I’ve been here and there’s always an option to do more

like

Growth at McK is extremely fast. You can become a partner within 6-8 years

like

Probably great if you are interested in becoming a generalist but maybe not as bleeding edge as the supply chain consultancies

like

Is anyone here on the Ops practice not 100% satisfied? If yes, why are you staying at McK?

Downsides please

I completed my interview loop at Google on August 12, 2022. My recruiter informed me on August 29th that due to a couple of realignments within the org, the hiring manager has not shared any feedback. I was informed on September 8th that the hiring committee is scheduled the next day (September 9th) and that I can expect a final feedback latest by September 12th. I wasn’t informed of the results and reached out, but the recruiter isn’t replying to my emails. Does this mean I was rejected?

How do you handle billing disputes? Already feel like we’re a steal compared to other firms, but it’s the pits when clients kvetch about the bill after working hard on their matters. For five figure disputes, anyone recommend collections? Don’t really want to institute retainers, especially since it doesn’t seem common for our practice area.

$530k HHI, $250k cash on hand, $1.2M investments/retirement. Plan to buy $800-900k house as our first home, but thinking of the best approach given rates today. My thinking is that we (i) put $200k+ down and get a 5/1 ARM. (ii) put everything we save moving forward toward paying down the principal (after maximizing retirement accounts). Should be able to do $100k per year. (iii) If rates go down below 4.5ish % for 15 year fixed, refinance and stop aggressive payment. Thoughts on this approach?
