Yes! Thanks for speaking up. I'm planning to start homeschooling in the fall, I have a rising 3rd grader and I'm tapping all of my networks for advice. We are in the process of deciding if we want to do a virtual school (where teachers handle the curriculum) or pure homeschooling where the parents create the curriculum. We want a self paced program so that our child doesn't feel rushed/anxiety re tests and deadlines but also this news segment REALLY spoke to me and I want to tap into the black family homeschool networks.
personally, I've found it great - particularly in comparison to formal schooling - for my child, but that's with the caveat that I think successfully executing it requires a lot of dedication, coordination, and planning amongst your spouse/family/village.
For us, it was about finding dedicated time, a learning program that fit our child's learning style, and carving out space for supplemental stuff - including social activities, complementary learning content, and downtime. In some ways, it's a second job that runs at the exact times when you're working regularly, so you really have to find the cadence/lessons/etc. that work best for your situation...
