We went with a Black pediatrician who was not affiliated with the hospital where I delivered (which is the hospital where my obgyn who is also Black is affiliated). During the few days we were in the hospital our babies were seen by the hospital pediatrician and we seamlessly transitioned to our preferred pediatrician after we were released from the hospital. It has worked out well with both my 3 year old and 6 month old.
We used the hospital ped during our stay and then switched to our preferred ped. No issues. My only recommendation is to decline vaccines in the hospital and just wait till you go to your permanent ped. Otherwise you will have vaccine records in two different offices which is annoying. You can’t clarify you aren’t anti-vaxx but just prefer all of your records to be in one spot.
Honestly the hospital ped doesn’t do much. It’s really the labor and delivery squad plus specialists that do hearing exams etc. I think the ped just said hi and left 😂. My second was in NICU so again the NICU staff did all the work not the ped.
The hospital pediatrician will obviously take over once the baby is there and as long as the baby is in hospital. However, I believe your pediatrician can visit the baby and check out the baby as needed.
Thanks for this. Are you in Dallas? Apparently here, they can only do the on-site if they have hospital rights. There is a pediatrician on call for those who haven’t picked one or who’s family doctor doesn’t have hospital rights.
So I’m trying to get perspective from people who couldn’t or didn’t have a preferred ped do the initial exam. It sounds like maybe your family was in that camp? If so, did you run into any surprises (e.g., your ped discovered a condition that the baby had that was never mentioned in the hospital)?
Yes, we loved our pediatrician, but he did not have rights for when I went in for #2. So we worked with the on staff peds team; and went to her "first appointment" as soon as I was discharged
