Negotiate whatever it is you need, or at least try to. Work from home days, specific days off (reduced work schedule) or late start/late end or early start/early end etc.
OP - I worked out a reduced work schedule for three months. However, the work was not scaled accordingly. I was expected to do 40+ hrs of work in 30 hours, and I was paid a reduced salary. So if you are planning on working less hours, it is good to work out how the workload might be scaled.
I think it’s also helpful to go in with some suggestions of how you’d like to work in your new normal but keep that conversation going because it’s going to change.
I would also recommend being as transparent as possible. Before I got pregnant with my son I had no understanding for why folks needed flex in their schedules and the demands of working motherhood. I am honestly a little embarrassed about that. With my teams I’m trying to be a forthright with why some things are changing (e.g. I block my calendar to pump, need to leave at 4:50 but then will be online sending emails at 9:50) so at least they know why.
All of this! Pumping can be draining (no pun intended hehe) physically and mentally have 30 minute pump breaks at least 3 times a day, if you can. Also pump before you leave for work (that’s the time I got the most amount of milk). I’m the primary caregiver, I come in at 9 and leave at just before 5 so I can catch a bus to get to daycare on time and am online until about 7:30 between making dinner and putting him to bed. Make sure you set boundaries. If you don’t, no one else will! Good luck will all the things!
This is helpful! I’ve been back one month but now want to ask if I can WFH few days a week. Is it too late to ask? How do I bring up the conversation?
See if your coverage person can continue to help you have a soft return for a couple of weeks while you ramp back up mentally.
1) WFH day once a week
2) Flex time - so if on some days you can put in 7 hrs at work, you can put in an extra hour or two from home.
