Was the property occupied prior to the upgrades? Is your insurance assuming that the house is being occupied? Or did they know it was under construction / being upgraded?
Depending on your insurance, I could see them denying the claim if the property wasn’t insured for the condition it was actually in (IE: partially torn apart).
You may also want to explore your contract with your contractor and/or explore a claim against their insurance, particularly if the house wasn’t as secure as it could have been…
Coverage will depend on if the carrier knew it was vacant. Theft isn't typically covered on basic policies. Did you check if the policy covers theft and how the vacant clause reads? What carrier is it?( some are better than others for claims)
I thought that insurance typically excludes theft or vandalism from a vacant property.
