Go with Logitech MX series for an ergonomic mouse. High quality hardware, and no connection issues (using the dedicated USB dongle) compared to other Bluetooth mice I’ve used in past.
Make sure your mouse has a smooth scrolling wheel, not a faceted one (or the ability to switch between like the MX series), as that will feel much more natural on a Mac (and for design tools especially).
Vertical mouse will relieve your arm a fair amount, it'll take a bit of getting used to but I did prefer it over a standard mouse and WAY preferred it over magic mouse/trackpad for pixel-pushing and my daily workflow. My main issue was the stuttering connection quality of the RF dongle, but that might not affect your unit so much. It's worth a shot IMO.
Tablet/pen is a hand position that will not relieve stress without being diligent about hand posture and grip strength; it takes a while to get used to how it feels, and having to learn pen button mappings and set up fancy hotkeys, made it less viable as a UI/UX tool IMO. Many of our common programs implore us to use keyboard shortcuts frequently, and your efficiency will probably go down sharply for a while as you learn how to incorporate those into that workflow. Tablets are better for drawing/sketching/sculpting work.
Anker has a decent but inexpensive vertical mouse. Helps out in a big way.
Came here to recommend this. I have the wired and wireless one and both are great
I've been using the Logitech MX Vertical mouse - has been great!
I actually been using a scroll ball mouse for while now and it saves my hand for real. I don't like the vertical mouse it just feels always foreign even after you learn to use it.
Glad that it helped you! Sounds like a good option to try
I was diagnosed with cubital and carpel tunnel syndrome and my doc recommended a vertical mouse and ergonomic keyboard since I want to avoid surgery at 37. Since then I got the Evoluent large right hand vertical mouse and the Logitech Ergo K860 keyboard and haven't had a day of pain yet. One day with a regular mouse and keyboard brings back the pain and numbness so definitely notice the improvement and would recommend them. The learning curve wasn't too bad either.
Glad to hear that it really helped! 🙌
Thank you all for sharing!
I got a bit hesitant as the ergonomic assessor suggested the pen+tablet over the vertical mouse. I’ll go for the vertical mouse and see if it helps!
I hate the Apple mouse. I always got hand cramps when using it. The mouse I use was 1/2 the price of an Apple mouse and works SO much better.
Note. The Bluetooth on MacBooks are notoriously unreliable with non-Apple peripherals. I'd recommend getting a cordless mouse with a "Dongle" that plugs into the USB port. It is much more reliable.
I reduced pain by using a Steve Jobs–era Apple mouse with it set to only 1 button. You can buy those mice new-old-stock on eBay. The most important thing is to set it to 1-button mode. This relives stress on your index and middle fingers, as you can distribute the pressure of a click to your whole hand instead of sharply on only 1 finger. Right-clicking is done by leaning the side of the left hand on the left Control key.
That’s neat, thanks for sharing!
Razer Pro-click, very similar to the Logitech Mx but so far (6months in) none of the really annoying disconnect issue the mx series has/had. Best mouse I've used far, does a decent job for the ofd gaming session too :-)
I use the Logitech MX as well and think it works great! Definitely worth the $99
