Comp is good, wlb is good, but never forget that (as with all professional services) it morphs into a sales role pretty rapidly.
It’s sales (and even if you’re not selling searches, you’re selling roles to prospects). It’s a great job for hustlers who are okay with a lack of control (your candidates changes their mind, you can’t do much; your client hates your perfect candidate because they didnt go to Harvard, etc.).
Comp is heavily based on closing searches - at least at the firms I know - so base comp can be lower. They generally want consultants with networks - so director is ideal for them, unless you’re really junior and just going to come up the ranks.
WLB is dependent on your client and manager - but better than consulting. Much less travel. SS is known as being the nicer folks than KF.
Once you go to recruiting at a senior level, will be hard to get back to consulting / industry in a business role (except maybe sales). It’s viewed as taking a lifestyle job / a step down / not intellectually challenging.
(I did exec search for a few years post MBA, went back to consulting, in tech now. Hope this is helpful)
So helpful. Thank you! Was it hard to transition back to consulting? Did you feel like some of the years of your experience in search we’re disregarded?
