I have two friends who were in consulting until they made Partner then sold everything they owned and moved to Morocco to start an orphanage and school.
I believe money allows you to be more altruistic later in life. If I weren't planning to have children, I'd probably become a teacher. It would super fulfilling, but I wouldn't make enough money to give my own children opportunities in this world. You have to pick your priorities and run with them.
The best way to make a change is to get high enough at a top consulting firm and then either switch over to or start a firm that does good for society.
Overall, if you’re not high enough at a firm that aims to help the world, you’ll deal with a bunch of bullshit, inefficiencies, and (to be honest) dumb people giving you orders. Leaving you burnt out and frustrated
I struggle with this also. I actually tried working in renewables, but hated the people and industry culture, and I quickly realized work environment is more important to my happiness than what I do. So I assuage the guilt by donating - my money will go farther to make a difference than my efforts in doing something I'm not completely competent in. If you haven't already, pick up a copy of The Most Good You Can Do. The premise of effective altruism is that it's not about having a feel-good job, it's about how much impact you can actually affect.
I find fulfillment in what I do...? 🤨🤨 It’s about perspective. Sure, there’s BS at times but for the most part I enjoy what I do and feel very privileged to do it. It also affords me the life I want to live. I have a beautiful home, I am able to travel, my husband and I can splurge on items here and there without fear of not being able to pay our mortgage or feed our family, and my son wants for absolutely nothing. The BS is a nonnegotiable part of work...anywhere.
