I was promoted to the chair of my dept. (first woman woo hoo.) Here is the issue- I can’t do it all. I’ve always done a lot of marketing. Billed the most. People still expect that from me but I can’t. So now I’m trying to figure out what I can get relief with but I’m not sure what would give me the most relief. Any tips on how to find this balance? I have files clients won’t let me give up. I’ve give up the others already and am taking on very limited new cases going forward.

Our company has been doing fully remote since 2020. We previously decided this was fair since most of us decided we wouldn't risk coming into the office. I am in TAC for a fairly large networking company. I am making 48k a year with decent benefits and unlimited PTO. I love working at this company and my boss is fantastic. However, I feel as though I am being underpaid given my credentials. I have my CCNA and almost have my CWNA. Moderately jealous of all these new first year lawyers posting their swearing in ceremonies with judges they clerked or interned with. I got sworn in by our paralegal wearing at the coffee station because my partner scheduled a CLE I needed to assist with during the ceremonial event. Womp.

Trying to make the move to in house but most of my career has been litigation in various areas of law. I am trying to pick up some transactional work to get more experience. I am a quick learner and have no doubt I can move into more in house areas but it’s so hard to even get an interview to explain. Very few entry level jobs when I graduated and now can only get jobs in the stuff I don’t want to do anymore.

Tips for becoming more independent as you progress from junior to midlevel? I am starting to be put into the position of just having to handle things including drafting and could use some advice from others.

I’m an associate at a boutique firm making under market with 1950 hours req. While I absolutely love the people I work with, and I can handle the hour requirement, the work I actually do is just not my cup of tea (abt 80% insurance defense). I’m hoping to lateral to a bigger firm with lockstep or close to lockstep comp and generally more resources/better mentorship opportunities in the business lit./commercial lit. space. Any tips for going about successfully making the switch?

Just verbally accepted an offer to become the newest partner at a much bigger firm in town after 5+ years slaving for a smaller firm that told me they would only “let” me be of counsel (and pay rent equal to my current salary) or stay an associate. So long, late nights with no bonuses! Adios, screaming phone calls out of the blue! WOOOOO!!!!!!!!

HELP! I’ve been contacted by a small private security firm who wants me to be their “on call” counsel. They describe it as a lot of contract review, drafting NDAs, etc. but also being there if/when they need to license a vehicle, defend civil suit, etc. It’s overwhelming but sounds like a really great opportunity. I have enough background to be comfortable with contracts and litigation, but don’t want to get myself into a mess. Has anybody else ever had a job like this?

Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position.
