Are you asking about a principal or a managing director? Both are technically partners just one is an equity holder, has to retire at 62 where the other has no equity and no forced retirement age. As for the equity, the # of units you buy in for depends on what level you come in as a principal. The value of a unit fluctuates based on how the company does as a whole each year.
...should add: you typically bit in for 350 business units that pay out 1k/ea if the firm meets plan. Or so I am told.
D1 is fairly close for a newly promoted partner, except you have to take into account the buy-in. Puts take-home at 290. If they're a direct-admit then SM1 is correct, it depends on what level they come in at
