You has to learn how to sift through the emails and if someone has a metric for something, you will be emailed about it even when you are off of work. I used to regularly come into the office with over 200 emails waiting. I also made sure no one on my team got fired and put them through training instead of firing. There is always pressure to fire people who aren’t hitting their pre defined metrics (like you have to package so many items per hour). As a manager you have an option to have them trained or be fired. I also easily walked a half marathon every day and during busy time it was literally 12-15 hour shifts. I don’t think I ever had a shift under 12 hours. You also either get a shift of Sun - Wed or Wed - Sat. Usually someone new coming in gets the night shift and the crappy one (Imagine starting work at 5 pm and getting off at 6 am and never having a weekend going from Wednesday at 5 pm and then the week ending at 6 am on Sunday. That is the life of a new area manager) I would literally get off of work and wake up just in time to go to work. Imagine the holidays or Prime day or any busy time. You are expected to come in even if not officially scheduled. Everyone at Amazon loses A LOT of weight too so in a way it can be good for your health to move around so much.
Interviewed for it coming out of college. Then read Glassdoor and immediately turned down the offer
I second D1. Had an offer, but turned it down once I read reviews online.
It's a indentured servitude job. The hours are 12-15 every day and sometimes 6 days a week during peak season. It's a warehouse manager job.
A1 but you're also making 80k+ and 20k signing bonus + Amazon stock options. Worth it or nah?
Well I think if you are ok with the requirements then do it. I worked with a girl who left ACN for the job and she has expressed her interest to come back. She made it seem that if it's a corporate office job at amazon then take it, if it's a distribution center/warehouse then stay away. But take a deeper look for yourself to see if it's for you. If your looking for a change in type of work then this may be it
I did too, but can it really be that bad? I had a friend who quit after a few months but he's not much of a go getter
Agreed with corporate vs warehouse. Just curious if there is any room for negotiation due to ridiculous turnover
The 20k signing bonus is the way they trap since you have to pay it back if you leave in the first yeat
I used to have that job and then came to consulting. You are assigned a specific section of the warehouse to run and you have to make sure everyone hits their metrics. Amazon is literally a sweat shop in the warehouse and you will get over 400 emails a day. (They used to have ambulances waiting outside for people to pass out from the heat. If not for a news story, they would have never installed A/C)
A2 😳...that's intense. Why 400 emails per day? Did you figure out a way to make people's lives better or did you just watch it happen? Pros vs. Cons?
Thanks for the insight, A2. That's pretty crazy and definitely in line with what my friend told me. I feel like it's questionable to have kids coming out of college immediately become managers, but I guess it's a sink or swim kind of role. How long did you last?
About 6 months before I said it wasn’t worth it anymore. When my whole life is literally sleep and work I decided I wanted more in life and just walked in and gave back my computer. I was the 3rd area manager to do that within a 1 month time frame on my shift. Most people stay long enough to cash out the stock options and then quit right after that
I have 2 friends contemplating the job. Was the money/ overtime worth the hours?
I make more and have a lot more time in consulting. While the stock options are nice, my time is my most valuable asset. Break down what they would make per hour at Amazon and then ask yourself if it is worth it. 90 hour work weeks during the holidays (I-banking has a much great ROI if your whole life is just going to be work
Do u think u would have been happier if promoted to the Operations Manager role after having been area manager?
Not at all...they have longer hours than the area manager and basically walk around to each area manager to keep them on task and do the planner before every shift. They can be like the annoying micro manager and are expected to micro manage too
