What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. I’m working at an insurance defense firm, trying to target my practice to L&E. I’m overworked and underpaid, but gaining valuable experience I hope to pivot toward an eventual in-house counsel position. I recently was offered an opportunity to lateral to a national firm for a significant pay increase (150% salary increase, much better benefits, hybrid WFH options). Problem-I would be shifting gears to Toxic Tort. I’m torn between my passion and the money. I’m a second year associate. WWYD?

Case load= malpractice? Small plaintiff’s firm of 25 attorneys. I was a 2 year associate hired and given 50 active files in pre litigation status. 9 mos later a partner quit and I inherited 45 more. I got up to 105 files. Now I hover at 85 active files in varying stages of pre lit. I asked managing partner for help and was told to settle more claims to lessen my load. Is this what people consider negative work culture?

I’ve been practicing in traditional labor for about two years now (although about a decade of labor relations experience) but I’m trying to break into employee benefits law. Unfortunately I’m not being given much experience in benefits as I’m pretty typecast as a labor atty. Any advice on how I can go about getting employee benefit experience?
