You need a new financial advisor

Unless you have millions to invest, this isn't for you. There is a huge commission paid to your advisor for selling these. Guess where the money comes from.

like

I should also add that I'm invested heavily in my 401k, an IRA, variety of stocks and cryptocurrency so this is another diversification technique for me.

like

Whole life makes sense in some situations, mostly tax minimization for very high net worth people. Odds are though he just wants to make a large commission. Is he a CFP?

like

I will break even on mine after 10 years and then sitting pretty after that. The value will never tank like people's 401k's did in 2008 because it is guaranteed money. I'm feeling good about it.

like

OP - yes. Exactly. Any money that is in the account is yours to use assuming the death benefit wasn't needed. In regards to cryptocurrency, I'm doing that for fun but am not counting on that as a long term play. I do not own Bitcoin but instead bought others like Ethereal and Litecoin. There are a bunch of other cryptocurrencies to look into as well.

like

Yes, but it is way more complicated than that. There are a narrow set of times when you can withdraw/borrow from the policy without generating costs that far exceed the tax benefits.

like

He just wants the commission

@BCG1 he is a CFP and is also a friend with the same plan. I just am not sure I'm sold on the upside of this. I don't have millions haha. He is selling this as a way to diversify

@A1... exactly what he is saying too. The idea being that you'll be able to actually use that money at some point right? Not as interested in the actual purpose (die and it goes to heirs/family). Do you think cryptocurrency would be a better first move? I've looked into a bit, seems a little late to enter now.

It is a sound financial investment...for your broker to maximize commissions. For you, notsomuch. Get a new broker

It provides a Roth-like tax structure with lots and lots of fees built in. If you've maxed out every other tax-advantaged account, including most of the esoteric ones that would have you putting away >$60k per year, then you can start thinking about whole/universal/variable insurance policies.

Ok, the money in the account is your but is subject to a number of penalties if you just withdraw outright

Depends on how you choose to withdraw it and when.

Highly Technical Market Sell-Off - Though, it has picked up over lunch and I suspect that short term turn is in near. Old floortrader told me once, never trust a market that is making new session highs or lows during lunch. That's not normal. This might not be a normal day; but we do need to rebound to get another opportunity into the short trend. So, count on it. The last draw is more suspect as it hasn't been proven to exist yet. So, we will see how we look when we trade 9855.75 on NQ.

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??
