Yep, like sometimes I am speaking another language (and often it’s because my brain moves faster than my mouth and I leave words and sentences and entire events out of a story or discussion because my brain has already moved past it).
I don’t really trust myself, ha. When I have to present in important meetings or when I have an important conversation, I outline the most important talking points in notes I keep on my screen or written down to make sure I cover things in the right order and with the relevant details for my audience (but not TOO much detail, as I also struggle with being concise). I read them over to make sure it actually makes sense (and sometimes will get advice from others—people who aren’t as close to the project or whatever it is—to make sure they’re able to understand what I’m trying to convey).
I will practice if I want to seek more like I’m speaking off the cuff, but I also have noticed people don’t mind/notice if you’re referring to notes here and there as long as you don’t seem like you’re reading verbatim and as long as you know the core message (like if you have to refer to your notes to reference a stat or some research or figures, that’s fine).
Sometimes you can even throw in a caveat: “I’m going to summarize the most important points, but please feel free to interrupt to ask a question if I don’t cover everything you want or need to know—I’ve been working on this a long time and I’m familiar with all the nitty gritty details but recognize that not everyone is and my broad summary might not answer everyone’s specific questions.” That kind of covers you (without making you seem like you’re a bad communicator) if you leave something out.
Yeah. Tbh I don’t even really understand myself most of the time
Same. Sometimes I stop listening to myself talk/zone out while I’m talking and then “come back” and wonder what the heck my mouth just said while I was on autopilot.
