-train car has higher cubic capacity so how much more are you able to ship from a to b per load
-what is your linehaul rate on road vs per load on train (don’t forget dray to / from train, cost of special rail dunnage)
-figure out a cost per cube between the two methods and take the difference
I've never thought of it as dollars saved, but revenue increased. If you can show profit through operation, I guess you can take that against depreciation or the bond/loan for the asset, to show "dollars saved". Even then, I'd just show it as increased profit.
Unless there's a cost to having the train sitting (like a storage fee), I'm not sure you'll save money by operating the train.
