Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

It's so sad this is the only thing we can talk about lately, both here and in the office. They successfully destroyed morale and any semblance of culture
Absolutely agree, this is not the firm i came into, we are now reminded that we are mere cogs in a machine
I'm not sure it helps everyone, but I think it can be helpful to remember the macro context that layoffs are a very typical part of the consulting employment cycle and that many of our peers/competitors are having to make similar hard decisions. Further, there's a learning curve for smaller companies experiencing fast growing in how to continuously 'right size' to keep pace / continue growth without finding yourself in position of having over-hired when deal flow / demand tapers. The situation of present is far less an indication that the culture or the people here/past are anything less than excellent and more a natural consequence of trying to grow a business in fluctuating economic climates.
Stay strong and let the hard times serve as a relative backdrop against which the good times are even more appreciated over the course of your career.
