Listen to your treatment team- Take the leave of absence asap.
Getting what you need will improve your performance and reputation, whereas trying to continue working right now when you’re not at your best is almost guaranteed to hurt your performance and reputation.
Taking the leave of absence from work will help you long term within and beyond your professional life!
Listening to your team, going to inpatient, and healing will take an unfathomable amount of courage and effort. Don’t worry about work right now! Good luck!!
You’ll be good, medical leave is protected. I wouldn’t share why with anyone, just the external/third-party team that handles your claim
You have a whole community here telling you to take your leave of absence. From experience, working with colleagues who think they “haven’t done enough” usually do the most and underestimate their contribution. I will respect them nevertheless and look forward to working with them again once their start putting their health first.
No job is worth your health and safety
Take your leave—people are understanding of medical leave and know that it is only used when it absolutely needs to be. Please focus on recovery and good luck on your journey <3
OP, federal law allows you to take a medical LOA via the Family Medical Leave Act for up to ~12 weeks so long as you have been employed for 1 year. Your employer is legally unable to fire you during this time. Several states also require employers to pay you at a reduced rate during this time. I believe these states include NY, NJ, DC, MA, CT, CO, among others.
Your employer does not need to know the details of your FMLA. Hammer out the details with your provider and then inform your employer per the regulations in your state. Good luck
Google “Family Medical Leave” and “[your state] paid family medical leave” and you should be able to find all the info you need fairly easily. Your employer is typically also required to distribute materials regarding FMLA when you’re hired.
Also interested to know about this and the amount of discretion necessary to project leadership; I'm in a depressive episode
You are not alone.
They don’t need to know anything, just that you’re taking time off for a short-term disability
Take the leave. Even if it did hinder you in the short term career wise, it will allow you to succeed and grow in the long term! Nothing is more valuable than your health
Yep take the leave. Nothing comes before your health. Good luck with recovery - you’ve got this
Just make sure you distribute the tasks you currently handle
You absolutely should do what you need. At the end of the day, work is just work and your health comes first. I had to do the same for my anxiety and it was the best professional decision I ever made. Happy to chat if helpful.
My BIL had a junior associate at an IB, similar level of experience to you, take medical leave. It happens, you’re not alone on doing this!
Please take care of yourself first. You can't be a good employee if you're not healthy. I have gone on short term disability for mental health (and inpatient treatment) in the past and I'm so glad I did. My boss was the only one who knew what my situation was but everything else was done through insurance.
Your health is what matters most. Getting back to a healthy place is all that matters. As someone with an ED myself I am always working to make sure my health is #1 and it took me getting away from a toxic former job in the Big 4 to feel empowered to care about myself for the first time as an adult. You can do this! Have the tough conversations and share only as much as you want to/can with leadership, but you (and everyone for that matter) are valuable enough to your company that they should want you to feel and live your best, even if that means taking a little break from work.
I don’t have to know you to be proud of you for whatever you have you overcome leading up to this point and for whatever you will overcome going forward :) best of luck OP
