McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Honestly, no. Without significant depth in a field you are interested in, between wlb, fun, and pays well, you get to pick 2.
Finance exits are mostly going to be month end finance processes like budget, wouldn’t call that fun. If you did want to venture to tech, you could find a sales engineer role supporting a fintech product. I’ve enjoyed roles like that in the past, but career progression was limited.

To expand on this, there are three ways to make a lot of money at a company.
1. Have specialized knowledge a company will pay you a lot for
2. Provide an insane amount of working hours to a company
3. Be a revenue generator for the company and generate tons of revenue (sales)
As a generalist consultant that wants good wlb that really only leaves you option 3
Do you mean you’ve mostly done finance work? Or you’ve mostly done work for clients in the finance industry? If the former, yes. If the latter, meh
Both, but I generally agree with your take…
This is kind of along the lines of PE, but I’ve always thought it would be incredibly fun and cool to go in with a search fund. You’re basically a CEO for hire and turnaround small - mid sized companies.
That is a good spin. Agreed.
