Are there good examples of communities that have succeeded in getting revenue from outside sponsors or even advertising? I like the idea of finding ways to support good communities out there as a means of both engaging with the right kinds of people AND giving back to community managers & owners who have invested in building their communities. There is plenty that is paid for by brands and quite a few monetizing through membership but what about sponsorship?

Reddit, twitch, discord

I would also say Medium and Quora

Yes. For instance, the online game streaming platform Twitch has successfully attracted sponsors to support its community. Also, many online forums and message boards have been able to acquire sponsorships from brands and organizations in their respective industries.

Reddit is great a this as well as Quora. They are the biggest ones and a blue print for many of us
