Hi All! I hope you guys are staying safe and healthy.
I am hosting a free workshop for teachers that I thought might benefit you. The workshop is called From Unsettled to Prepared Classroom. I am giving you the tools you need to feel organized and ready for this upcoming school year. There is so much that is still uncertain and it can be super daunting to start to plan for a year like this one.

Alternate lighting? Yeah, I turn one light switch off so half the lights are on, then alternate which half every hour.😂 Yeah, we can, but I had a principal once who was VERY energy conscious (worse than my father - like she was the one paying the bill). Banned all extra stuff - no extra lights, no coffee makers, no heaters, no microwaves, no mini-fridge. “Use the teacher’s lounge” she would say in spite it being on the end of a very long building. She would go around to rooms and offices on weekends and seek out unauthorized stuff or other things that she wanted unplugged at night and on weekends, writing up the offenders. I saw her introduced at a conference as an “award winning principal.” Yep, a green energy award. Crappy state test scores and staff morale, but we saved energy!
I had to get a doctor's note stating that I needed alt. lighting and light covers in order to use mine. I am a Special Education teacher and have them and led lights in my office/pull out room I share with another teacher. We both brought in doctor's notes. The students respond better to soft lighting too. They all relax and take an audiable breath of relaxation when they come in here.

I use the purple covers in my room pretty much for the same reason. I think it's of constellations or stars or something. It's it really does mute the fluorescence a lot and it's so nice.

I do believe that there are glasses that can be worn to counteract this. However, there are teachers in my building that use alternative lighting in their classrooms. My classroom would be prohibitive of it just because of its size and layout, however other classrooms in my building lend themselves to it.
I have covers on every other panel, and it's not too dark. Like others have said, the students seem to like it better as well, it's a more calming environment.
Everyone in our district was required to remove all covers over the florescent lights. We are now limited to one lamp.
If this lighting is causing you health issues, get a letter from your doctor. Then fill up your classroom with lamps and incandescent lights.
I get migraines from all kinds of sources and bright lights is one of them. I am happy that I have 2 light switches each for half the lights. I am able to use only half my lights and that helps a lot. If a doctor gives you a diagnosis for this then maybe the school system can make accommodations for you?

How about a side standing lamp???
I suffer from migraines as well, both from lighting as well as fragrances. Alternate lighting is allowed in our district as long as it is fire safe. Our district also has a policy regarding diffusers because of possible student allergies and asthma.
