What are you guys doing for affordable childcare?
I don’t get how that’s crazy?
Unfortunately my toddler is back at daycare while my MIL watches my infant.
That's likely because higher risk plus higher demand = higher rates. Yes it's a higher weekly rate, but only because they have to factor risk of getting sick and being incapacitated as well as possibly only getting a few hours of work a week. If you offered them $15/ hr and paid your portion as well as their portion of taxes (on the books) so they're eligible for unemployment, and guaranteed a minimum of 30 hrs a week with paid holidays off, as well as 2 weeks notice before termination of employment, they would probably take it. Taking care of kids is a huge job, but the people who do it usually aren't paid well or properly compensated for the risks they are taking :)
There is no higher risk in small pods, like private home daycare. 😂 Paying a provider the same rate you earn, or a little less than the same rate you earn is so ridiculous. Middle income families can’t afford daycare anymore. My friend who owns a daycare makes $2500 per head per month and she is licensed to have 18 kids. She’s doing fine. All providers are doing well. Parents are struggling.
Im assuming you meant 4k for the month but yea here in NYC childcare is extremely expensive. I'm hispanic so the way we do it is a friend of a friend knows this person who has a "daycare" center in their house. Granted its not authorized but in my culture we all grew up going to these spots while our parents worked. Everything is under the books.
Don’t pay it. That will just drive up the price. Basic economics here. Supply and demand. Don’t demand it by paying the ridiculous price and things will be better for all.
