Disclose upfront to save everyone time. Cannot speak for the other firms but McKinsey has phenomenal legal support. They’ll have you talk with their lawyers to make a game plan for visa support before your final round interview. It does not disqualify you at all.
If the Firm makes you an offer, they’ll ensure they honour it even if it means you do a transfer in a different office.
For context, I got my offer one day before the lottery deadline for my final out of 3 H1B attempts and they still applied for it and I got it. In case I didn’t, my recruiter walked me through my geographic options in case I got an offer.
Thanks Mck3. I suppose my issue with it is that 1) nationality was not indicated on the job description, in fact it had Mck’s usual verbiage on diversity and inclusion, 2) in the country the job is posted it has strict laws against discrimination in hiring, 3) yes I’m definitely qualified and a great candidate, demonstrated by why they reached out in the first place in an attempt to poach me.
I couldn’t care less about not getting an offer as I’m happily employed, but the “dismay” part comes from being discriminated against based on my nationality, and thinking how many others have been and will continue to be discriminated against based on their nationality or “Mck preference” that couldn’t legally be noted in the job description.
You sound like a nice and reasonable person though, despite being from Mck 😊
Yes, disclose it. You won’t waste your time if they don’t sponsor and you can focus your energy on applying to other companies that do sponsor

100% report it at the beginning
It’s the shadiest thing to hide it
I disclosed this with the recruiter in the initial call. I just got an offer and going to talk to the legal dept to figure out details. I’m in the middle of receiving my green card with my current employer and hoping can delay start date.
Seconded. For future reference, most companies ask this upfront when you apply. It’s never a good idea to lie. Lying, even small lies, is one of the reasons an offer might be rescinded, and also why some people are outright fired.
Depends on whether they asked this in the hiring process. If they asked, or stated in the job posting as requiring existing authority to work , then obviously tell the truth don’t lie. But if they didn’t ask, isn’t it up to the hiring company to ask?
Got an offer from BCG and they've been very helpful and flexible with start dates/potential solutions to the visa issue. Connected me with the immigration specialists right away and adjusted start date depending on when the approvals are expected to come through/my availability. I've felt supported throughout. There is no harm in telling in advance (there's probably a section in your application where this is asked, but I don't remember), all MBB's have large legal teams who specialize in immigration issues and a large number of international hires requiring sponsorship. Don't volunteer the info, but be truthful if asked - either directly or on the application itself
I disclosed it before the interview and everything worked well and I am now in one of the MBB
