As the holidays approach, I'm torn between taking PTO to spend time with family and friends and the nagging feeling that I need to be at work to wrap up year-end projects. It seems like there's never a perfect time to step away, and I worry that taking a break might reflect poorly on my commitment or affect my project outcomes. How do you all balance the need for personal time with the demands of closing out the year strong? Have you found any strategies that help manage this seasonal work-life challenge without dropping the ball or missing out on family time?

Trust me, if you get that call from the doctor you wouldn’t be thinking: I should have worked more.

There never is a perfect time to step away, but I think you've gotta do what feels right.

You’ll never regret taking time off to spend with your family. When you’re older you’ll regret working when you could have spent time with them.
When considering who to cut, they don’t care how hard you worked or how many things you sacrificed in your personal life.

If you’re unable to take time off at this time of the year and prioritize your friends and family, then you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

It depends on your leadership. Although, if it is all possible, it’s best to do what you can and then take the time as usually, you’ll come back in a better state, and in the long-term, it keeps the fam happy. The perfect time to step away is when your family is the happiest to have you spend time with them.
So never. Go to work.

I guess I’m glad to be at Deloitte. Literally 99% of the firm is off until 1/6 starting today.

My mantra has always been, no body is going to die if I miss work a day or two or three. It will be waiting for me when I get there. So yes I prioritize my well being and my family who will be around way longer than my corporate bosses.

Genuinely curious what you can still meaningfully do to close out the year strong. Next week pretty much every client is gone so what’s there to do? Spend time with your family….

Your company isn’t going to take care of you when you’re old and frail— your family is. Spend the time with the important people in your life.

I worked very hard for 18 months on a project, for a company I'd been at for over a decade, and finally got around to scheduling a bunch of PTO near the end of the year, starting on Halloween.

I got laid off just before Halloween.

Take the PTO.

If your commitment is going to be questioned for taking some time off for yourself and to spend with your family during the holidays, you might be at the wrong firm.

Try considering your relationship with your family as your most important project of your life and imagine the steps and decisions you’d take to finish that project strongly at the end of this year…

Doll, if you’re over 40 and still asking this question, you need to spend some time learning about boundaries. Including time bounding.

That’s the conundrum for all of us who live in project land. The treadmill never stops and there are two or three running besides you calling your name to hop on. I love it and hate it at the same time. As others have said, set your priorities and then communicate up and over. Prepare an honest status assessment so everyone know where things are, along with when and how to communicate with you while your out.

You will be more effective when you get back.

Best time to take off is when everyone else is also off and no one is expecting you to be responsible.

Are you delivering life-saving tech where people are truly going to be negatively impacted by your time away? If not, use your time, it's yours to take.

We save PDFs, not lives.

How would not taking a break to spend time with your family reflect on your commitment to your family and your personal relationships?

A company can replace you in a minute, you’re just a number. Your extra efforts are not appreciated. Prioritize your personal life. You can’t get the time back.

My marriage is beyond repair I think. Husband just said we keep having the same conversations over and over in the past year about things we’ve been trying to fix. Is a year enough time? 11 years together for reference. And I don’t think his statement is true - he literally mentioned one of those things last week that he was happy about. I just can’t do it with these vague statements in arguments.

Getting over heartbreak and having a full time job is torture lol. My boyfriend and I just broke up after almost a year of being together. It was such a beautiful relationship but ultimately he just didn’t love me. I love him so much. My mind knows that I deserve reciprocal love and I’m worthy, but I feel physically ill. My body hurts, my stomach is in knots, my head hurts. How is it that I have to mend a broken heart but also meet my billable hours lmao

I’m curious. What would you say is the best industry / sector for…1. WLB, 2. Great people / team, 3. Exit opp’s., and 4. Overall (mix of the above). Goes without saying the obvious “it depends on office, team, project, client, etc.” So this is an ask for general observations.

I have two offers in hand. KPMG and Deloitte. CTC is almost same whereas variable is more in KPMG. I am inclined towards Deloitte India. But HR in KPMG told me that I won't be able to join KPMG India in future as I accepted their offer. I informed her within 2 weeks and didn't do anything for onboarding. I didn't ask to increase the amount or JB and I strongly believe I informed early so they can look for other candidates. Is this bluff? Any HR here to clarify
