If your TC is over $700k and you're wondering whether you should buy or not, then you're not into that game. Simple as that. We all work hard, so treat yourself to something nice. Sure we can use that money for an investment, but to what end? Life's short and hopefully ya be alive to enjoy that investment. Eff it, I'm buying the watch and enjoying it. If anything, you can still sell it and take a loss and get some of your money back. 🤷
Yea that's a fair take
It’s more about net worth i think. I’d say 1-2% of your net worth is fine on something like that but I’m also way more conservative than others. I would just feel dumb wearing like 5-10% of networth on my wrist when it could be compounding in the market
If not now, when else would you? If you can’t answer that, then you have your answer
Ps…hire me lol
Me too!

Depends on what else is going on in your life. I’m at >$1M annually - but then I look at the mortgage, the two kids’ tuition, the 3 nice vacations per year, care for our parents… and just can’t bring myself to spend that on just one watch.
I got a rose gold AP royal oak when I had much lower income and regret spending that much on a watch. If you're in the fence now it'll only feel worse later. Now our HHI is ~$1.5M and dont buy stuff like that anymore because the joy of buying stuff like this dissipates quickly. Just save your money.
I am not sure I would ever spend $40k on a watch, unless it is a truly investment piece. But if it makes you happen and dropping $40k doesn’t really make a difference financially, go for it.
That’s a one year TC due to stock appreciation which is different from having actual comp of $700k. I make ~$1M and would never spend $40k on a watch. But if I had no kids and already owned a house and a nice car, then maybe. If you have kids put that $40k in a 529 cause college is going to cost you way more than you think.
It's more about how badly you want the watch. It's clear you can afford it, and spending $40k on a luxury item almost never makes sense from a financial perspective.
For most people, their peak spending years are going to be somewhere in their 40s to 60s. The older you get, the more likely you will spend money on others (e.g. your spouse, children, parents). You may also become more hesitant to spend that kind of money on a luxury item, just for yourself. So if you really want the watch and feel like you might regret not owning it during your lifetime, one could argue that the best time to buy the watch is right now.
Ohh boy lol
Wonder how many people here have $40k worth of watches and are saying they would never buy $40k watch
OP could consolidate into one given it’s a royal oak. The point was more around opportunity cost though. A collection might be easier to justify than a single watch but it’s the same thing.

I bought my OF Daytona for exactly $40k in the grey market two years ago. Comp a little north of $1m at the time. However I did trade in another watch so the out of pocket was considerably less.
if you have to ask, not yet
200k post tax a month minimum so 40k is a dime in a bucket
