At which stage of an accounting career are professionals most marketable for job opportunities? Is it at the entry level, senior level, manager level, or controller level? Or after how many years of experience? I understand that having a CPA credential is advantageous.

I would argue senior manager or when a client wants you specifically. Seniors leaving PA are a dime a dozen

like

Kpmg1: I agree with you on that. I think I was just interpreting it differently. There are more options at senior, but I have senior managers take very good exits.

Difference between most marketable and best opportunities.

Most marketable? 2nd and 3rd year seniors. Mass commodity that’s in need.

Best positions? Senior managers with 10-11 YOE. Just have to be selective.

Know a partner who tells all high performers to stay at least until 3rd year SM and then decide if they want to quit because 12 YOE is around when you can’t replace the income Big 4 pays by quitting, so it makes little sense for people to doing will to quit before then.

Some people make it to manager if they leave before senior. Most don’t.

I’m a senior manager now; as an associate I worked under 12 seniors. Of those:
—One is still a SM at KPMG
—One made manager at KPMG and then left for a VP of accounting role at a startup where she had connections
—2 made manager in industry
—7 are senior accountants

Also tracks with people in my start class I know, and the people I’ve seen leave who work for me. There’s less need to managers in industry vs. public. That’s why senior accountant-land is a thing.

Depends on the desired role

Private Co. CFO? Partner
Public Co. Controller? SM/D
Asst Controller? M
Senior Accountant? SA

like

Very few SM will go directly into controller role at a private mid market company, let alone a public company.

Does where you get your masters degree matter? Hi fishes,

I think I am slipping into depression. My life seems to have no meaning and all I do is work. I don't get time for myself or my family, friends and loved ones. But I can't leave my job and take a break as I need the financial support.

I also feel I am earning way less than my peers which makes me feel like a loser. 4.5 years of work-ex and 16LPA.

What should I do? I need good wlb but also need money badly.

Purely mercenary question here: If I'm currently a 7yr working EPLI at an ID firm, and want to break $300k in the next few years, is there a route to get there?

So I get that in a corporate set up, you are supposed to be sharp and witty and think on your feet. Trouble is, I am extremely slow with comebacks. (Think Ross in Friends/Amy in B99) at the crunch moment, I generally end up not being able to give a good roast back. Unfortunately the best of them come to me like a few hours later (dinner/shower/TV) and I am left ruing and amazing opportunity to have gotten one back. I am awful at jibes and roasts.

Anyone else suffer from this?
