Write a number on a napkin. Fold it. Slide it across the table.

Is it bad taste to use other offers?
Whenever you lie about your salary when you're looking for an new job, add 10k. Everyone expects a counter offer. BUT. Only lie about your salary if the new agency isn't in the same holding group. If you're moving from one IPG-owned shop to another IPG shop, they can check. But if you're going from an IPG shop to a WPP one, then there's no way to cross-verify.
If you have the opportunity, say a number first. Your happy number. Shoot high so that you create an anchor to negotiate from. Or they may just give you your happy number, which is what makes it the happy number. If you can manage never tell them what you previously made. It's irrelevant to the current job you're trying to get. Take that shit off the table before it starts.

Don't give a range, you'll always get the bottom number. If you are not feeling uncomfortable saying the number, you are not asking enough.
Helps to have a competing offer. I once read the following saying works: "this is what it'll take to get me there tomorrow, and this is what it will take to make me feel valued". Never tried it and may not work at agencies but food for thought

Make them feel like losing you would suck.
Well is it negotiating for a raise where you are right now or for a new offer. If it's a current employer, yeah it's tricky. If it's a company you just got an offer from, of course you're shopping around and yiu should leverage better offers to get what you want
