How high up the chain does salary negotiation for a LA candidate go?

My sister interviewed for a LA position and the last she heard over a week after the interview was that they were trying to get approval for her out of band salary request.

Would that be going up to the principal or the VP for approval?

TIA!

Principals can report into other principals.

like

Probably principal, but some admin chains are more centralized around VPs.

like

Thanks! She said the principal was one of her interviewers, so I didn't know if that kicked it up a level for approvals given the time lag.

If it’s out of band it’s likely to need approvals above principal.

like

Offer above band will go to VP or CSO depending on how high the ask. Also if there was a sign on above a threshhold that would go to VP

like

In that case the team should have vetted her ask early to avoid this delay and save her the worry. But that doesn’t always happen. It’s an A+ best practice but not the end of the world if it doesn’t. The approver is probably out of the office. I wouldn’t worry too much if I were her— I think it’s awesome she’s getting such a great offer.

like

Yall. There is literally a documented process for this. There’s no guessing. Offers up to LA are approved by principals, unless certain exceptions occur (like large bonuses or salary above band) in which case they go to VP or CSO depending on the amount.

They wouldn’t just offer at SA level because those positions are recruited by an entirely different team called executive recruiting.

like

Closing the loop on this, she didn't get the position. The feedback she got was that the hiring team really liked her and wanted to bring her on, but couldn't meet her salary.

...Which they knew about ahead of time... 🤷

Thanks for the info, everyone!

like

If it’s out of band, it seems like they’d bring her in at the next level otherwise she may run into some issues getting staffed. The Lead Associate band is pretty wide as is.

Unless they mean that she’s asking for more than what they initially wanted to devote to the role and in the case, it seems like it would just go to the Principal.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
