Expert is do-able, but jumping in as an EM is very rare and often a disaster. It’s incredibly difficult to be an effective McK EM without seeing and learning the role here. I’d come in as an ASC before coming in as an EM.
Very few if any laterals are hired in at PL level
I would not apply as PL/EM but would start as a consultant. Gives you a bit more time to learn the firm‘s language understand how the teams and practices work and build a network. Most experienced hires I know quickly progressed through the stages. But they cut EM and AP time short, not so much the associate time
Also: the only experienced hire I know who started as an EM really struggled with the very fast ramp up and the expectation to manage a McK engagement after a four month ramp up like someone who has known the firm and it’s internal processes for years. They left consulting track after a year and the firm after two
I had 8 YOE before joining BCG as Consultant.

MBA? Or non MBA master?
What are your 8 YOE in? Consulting? What firm?
Rising Star
Consultant (BCG) or Associate (McK)
You could apply for a specific practice based on your experience
Not exactly the same question, but I’ve seen more people make the Director/Senior Manager (from B4) to AP jump - is that more doable because there’s a domain expertise component and maybe a sales component there? Normally I’d imagine it gets harder and harder to move the further up you go?

That sounds about right. The one I saw was elected vs never (which was like 2 vs 30-40). Mine was for for particular region.
There is also a subset that come to McK (as a Director or SM elsewhere) and stay for 2 years. Even if things don’t work out (as it usually doesn’t) it does provide a better exit due to brand equity (so in a way this provides any downside protection)
Curious about this, I know a couple of Lighthouse Managers who left for PL roles at Gamma.
Can't speak to about their success at BCG, but I talked to one and they said it's not impossible to land PL role.
Interesting, data scientists?
Thanks a lot everyone! Great feedback - made the decision much easier
