State farm is advertising that they are sending a rebate and reducing rates but I haven't seen either yet.

helpful

The rebates don't make sense anyway, so who knows. I've driven maybe 50 miles in the last 2 months. 2 trips to the grocery store and 2 joy rides lol. I should be saving a heck of a lot more than 15%. And I'm happy to share the discounts with those who have to be on the road, but while they're generally lower risk with fewer cars on the road, they're higher risk than someone who isn't driving much at all.

[cont] I ask because GEICO sent an email today reiterating their 15% discount on premiums for renewals. At first I was like great. But when I went to try to get a better rate on my home insurance, I realized that this approach by GEICO actually forces people to stay locked into GEICO to reap the benefits.

Here is why it ended up being a problem for me:

My homeowners insurance is with Allstate. I was going to switch Auto to Allstate to get the multipolicy discount. However I do not qualify for their COVID auto discount because I didn't have the policy during the April timeline. I could still switch to Allstate for the multipolicy discount, but then I would miss out on the GEICO COVID discount.

So I guess it makes most sense to switch my homeowners insurance to GEICO for cost savings. Hmmm... I didn't give it much thought before, but now I'm wondering how much money GEICO will make with this strategy all things considered. Because I don't think they are losing that much by offering a 15% discount at the end of the day.

Lol. That is pretty standard for the industry. I hope you have a better experience than I did! Just know if you don’t, there is a State Board of Insurance and they will file a complaint on your behalf. If a company has enough complaints against them, they are kicked out of the state :)
