It’s not really cut and dry.
Let’s say you spent $1000 on tickets -
- scenario 1: $35 cash back
- scenario 2: 2,000 miles + 1,000 loyalty points. At 1.4 cents per point, that’s $28 worth of points plus whatever you value loyalty points at.
I’m not sure where checking bags come in.
It really depends on how you value the loyalty points. It takes 200,000 LP to get to EP and if you value EP at $5,000, the 1,000 LP are worth $25. So AA card is $53.
Thanks for the breakdown!
Checking bags was just bc that's a free perk of using the AA card (effectively a free $35 if needed), but it looks like I should just take the cash back. This one is a simple $180 RT to Miami. Mainly got the AA card for the signup bonus and free bags, swiping on it seems mostly worthless.
What card has 3.5% back?
BofA Premium Rewards Card (with 75% multiplier via Preferred Rewards tier)
3.5% on all dining and travel, no quarterly limit
If I was being really aggressive, BofA also has a card that can get 5.25% back on a category of your choice, but it caps to the first $2,500 per quarter. I use it mostly for online shopping though
