What does cutting the bar exam from 3 days to 2 have to do with devaluing attorneys?
AA2 Louisiana and Nevada have 3 day bars, so the argument still stands. A3 is not wrong just because 3 instead od 1 state out of 50 states have 3 day bars. Ridiculous assertion. We love someone who misses the entire point because of basically semantics.
Unfortunately we have a void in admissions of young attorneys in CA which is why this is happening.
First, there needs to be more recruitment to get folks to actually go to law school. Second, with the high cost of student loans and high cost of living in California it is harder to recruit younger attorneys in the state. Trust me I have begged young accomplished paralegals to do so but in this economy they don’t think it passes the cost benefit analysis. Law school admissions themselves are down at least 30% the last I heard.
With the older generation retiring during the pandemic it has created a huge loss of total experienced attorneys. We need to either make law school more affordable or firms need to vastly increase starting salaries to compensate for the long term investment new lawyers are making to actually live in CA. I know you may hate that last part since comparing what you started at versus them may feel hard, but it is really just supply and demand versus inflation at work.
California clients are also known to not pay their attorneys the same billable hours as their east coast equivalents. That is unfortunately a systemic school of thought and if we can’t push them to pay the higher rates it makes a CA only firm less competitive to new graduates because they can’t offer the necessary starting salaries.
No hate, just giving the facts and commiserating with you to the extent it is hard to find young attorneys especially in the 3-5 year sweet spot these days due to these issues that have been emerging for at least the last 5 years.
The bar exam is a joke. Graduating from law school should be the only requirement. The bar exam only proves you can memorize information for areas you don't plan to practice in and regurgitate it on an exam that simulates an experience that would constitute an ethics violation if you did the same in real life: answering questions about topics you aren't an expert in without researching them.
No bar exams...
“June 11 (Reuters) - More than 3,300 people who failed or withdrew from taking California’s troubled February bar exam will have the option to work under the supervision of an experienced attorney while they wait to take the attorney licensing exam, the Supreme Court of California ruled on Wednesday.
The court approved, opens new tab a request by the State Bar of California to extend an existing provisional licensure program enacted in 2020 when the bar exam was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which allows examinees to work under supervision for two years as they prepare to retake the test.”
I remember the bar exam anxiety and fear but looking back if you can’t pass the bar you should not be able to practice law.
Lots of really bad lawyers on the east coast, Washington DC specifically, just as with any profession and they are graduates of outstanding law schools. One wonders how it’s possible when there are bar exams to pass, but I witness it all the time, and in general it’s those who have graduated within the last 5 years. The impression is because they are graduates of a reputable law school that that is sufficient to call themselves a great lawyer, ie without doing the work.
I mean it’s California
