It depends. In most cases you don't need a lawyer, you just need to negotiate. Examples of where you'd benefit from one would be if there is risk to the organization (e g. Possibility of being accused of idscrimination of some sort).
If this is happening to you I'm sorry. It's shit, but you can often negotiate. The single most important negotiation advice is to always ask for more than you want. So if they offered a month and you want two, ask for three. I've been on both sides of this send know the landscape pretty well. Happy to advise if I can be helpful.

1) there’s a potential lawsuit
2) you have leverage - something you have/know
3) you’re senior - usually SVP or above
