Coach
Just so long as you are not like that obnoxious Skadden girl and send an all firm email to get your two seconds of fame, then you are fine
In my experience, you tell the office managing partner or your practice group head (or some other lead partner in your office) in person and they’ll ask you to send a follow up email to them with a copy to HR. That email is a simple “as we discussed, my last day at firm will be X.” And throw in some kind of thank you.
Yes, it has to start with conversations not emails
in my experience, phone call to partner you work with the most (or to head of your group if you work with them), then a short email to HR saying “please accept this email as formal notice of my resignation. my last day at FIRM will be DATE.”
i think it always feels way scarier leading up to giving notice than it really is — leaving is part of the business model and nothing to feel guilty about. sending you good vibes and good luck in your next role!
Agree with others that it all needs to start with a convo. Also going to say, even if you dislike your current firm, aren't hoping to ever come back, etc. burned bridges are not a good thing in the legal world. This industry is smaller than you think and always leaving on a high note should be the goal (assuming you are voluntarily exiting). This is all to say, every notice email I have ever sent had a couple of sentences in it about how I appreciated the opportunities the firm had given me and I would miss working with the team, etc.
[insert name], out. **mic drop**
In all seriousness, I don’t think there is any magic word. Just have to be clear that you’re sending the email to give your [2/4/x] week notice of resignation.
