Can employees get fired in notice period??

I'm a fresher and wanted to know these.

My LinkedIn feed was absolutely filled with layoffs today. What happened? A month or two ago it was a candidate’s market and the offers were great but now everything has shifted. I was informed that I am not getting a promotion that I was gunning for, and when I pushed back about being fairly compensated for my work the response about it not being a good time to ask was really ominous. Anyone else feeling bummed?

I quit my previous job approximately 5-6 months ago due to toxic culture and being pressured to commit fraud… I fear hiring managers see that I’ve been out of work for this time and may assume I was fired or laid off. Additionally I’ve had a couple interviews where company “X” interviewers have commented on this and in an effort to not bad mouth my previous employer I’m stuck with a generic answer like I want to take my career to the next level with Company “X.” Any thoughts/advice?

Is it wrong that I’m just not into PE/VC? It seems to be the most desirable exit for most people that I work with. I attended the interview more than a month back following which I was asked to submit all docs and the HR called saying that everything is positive and I should expect a client interview in the coming week itself. But no communication since then.
