The industry no longer offers the kind of wages that warrant a move IMO
The lack of job security further complicates things, too. Especially if you’re in a serious relationship. So my partner is supposed to quit her job, so we can move across the country. All for a job, which could potentially be eliminated within a year? No thanks.
That’s what I’ve done, but I’d rather not have had to. I guess that’s the advantage of just starting in a major market like NYC to begin with.
Rising Star
No, most people can’t, which is why most agencies are in NY and regional agencies suck.
You either commit to NY and hop around, or you jump to a smaller city, your kids start school, and then do whatever it takes to not get fired. Cool system!
Did the same. Bounced between New York, Miami, and LA over the past 15 years. Don’t really want to move again, though.
Start in a big city, bounce around the big city and work your way up. When you’re feeling done with the big city for whatever reason, or if the big city is done with you, move to a smaller market with multiple options (for example outside Philly, or outside Miami Ft Lauderdale) and use your big city experience to keep you going for the rest of the time.
Most companies aren’t offering compelling enough relocation packages to move your entire family (especially if your spouse would also be completely uprooted and lose their income).
Do not move to a smaller town with only one or two options and low funnel work. Thats when you screw yourself. Once every few years ai get an offer to move to Jacksonville or Tallahassee. F that. Not moving my whole situation for zero back up plan of and when it doesn’t work out.
I can’t believe that some of the smaller markets like Louisville, and Columbus, OH, and places like that haven’t embraced remote more. They could get such great talent if they’d just embrace remote.
It's crazy, I did it twice before covid but now that I have a family i can't imagine uprooting my child's life for an agency.
