Can people living in markets like NYC or San Francisco help those of us considering lateraling to those areas help assuage concerns about (or confirm) the crime and homelessness issues that there has been increasing reports of?

The homelessness reports are accurate in SF. It is absolutely out of control. If you park your car on the street it will get broken into.

Office parking garages are not safe either. I make sure to not leave anything in my car, not even a cheap jacket.

Confirming.

I grew up and went to undergrad in NYC. Practiced in SF for the last decade, Berkeley for law school.

If you’re uncomfortable with frequent exposure to a rambunctious itinerant population struggling with addiction and mental health issues, I wouldn’t suggest living in either of these places.

SF is horrible. We had clients in from NYC and they couldn’t stop talking about all the shit and open drug use on the streets, everywhere smelling like a mix of urine, shit, and smoke, people with mental health issues harassing you on the sidewalks, and so forth. That gives a sense of how the cities compare.

I know someone there last week who was there for 30 minutes and, in that time, saw a street assault by a homeless guy of an old woman right in front of him. And all of this is in the nicer part of downtown in the financial district by the Embarcadero, not the Tenderloin. It really is pretty bad.

You can add Los Angeles to this list.

I mean there’s a homeless problem but it isn’t a reason to not move. Especially since you drive everywhere in LA

NYC certainly has homeless - nowhere near SF levels but it’s definitely become a bit more present post pandemic. As to crime, there’s def been an uptick as well. I lived in NYC for almost a decade, and never ever felt unsafe, however, riding the subway at night did start to freak me out post pandemic. I think there’s no better city in the world but… I did start to carry pepper spray.

In my opinion NYC has gotten worse but by no means not worth living there if you are in the right neighborhood.

I might be about to lateral to SF…where should you live to avoid this if you don’t want to live in like the suburbs? (Just don’t want a long commute.)

Marin county FTW

NYC isn’t Mad Max but has more than its fair share of crime and people to steer clear of. It is, however, absolutely filthy. Planning to leave in a year or two for a suburb.

I live in NYC and haven’t really noticed any significant changes. But I live and LIC , work in FiDi and go out in hells kitchen or west village, so I probably am considered a bit sheltered. If you’re in Big Law you can afford to stick mostly to nice areas

It’ll be expensive, these are expensive cities.

Respectfully, though, these are major US cities each with lots of attorneys and you might be overthinking it a little bit if homelessness/crime is your top criteria for where to move. If you’re in BigLaw, you’ll be a bit mire sheltered and likely just fine in either city.

Aside from just the homeless issue, NY and SF are very different cities in many other ways. You should give thought to these differences between the two as well. Where are you relocating from?

In NYC - crime is out of control. Dont come

Seattle, San Fran, and Portland have out of control homeless problems. Don’t want to get into a political argument, but camp wherever you want policies are a failed experiments imo. I lived in Seattle and San Fran for a year respectively. I’ve now been in NYC for 6 six months. Im larger male so I feel like I wasn’t a target for robberies really, but my car was broken into in Seattle and San Fran. Live in Brooklyn now and have not really seen any of it. Some strung out people and craziness on the subway, but nothing like the west coast. You can find crime anywhere but I’ve definitely seen less in NYC (which I didn’t necessarily except)

Hello people of San Diego! Would love to hear how y’all are affording to live here comfortably. Please state your company, position, TC, YOE, and do you have a side hustle? I’ll start - I’m an advisor in Wealth Management with TC of $70k, 3 YOE and no side hustle. Among other things, rent just jumped from $2500 to $3700 for 2 bedroom and areas were looking at.
