Can someone have a prosperous career in Privacy without a Law degree? I studied Business (had some credits in Law) and also a degree in Cybersecurity, work in tech. I always loved law and my role involves some Compliance, which I like too. Thinking of getting certified as CIPP but not sure if not being a lawyer will block my chances of progression further down the line

Absolutely. I'm a privacy consultant who went to law school.

I can make just as much and more than Chief Privacy Officers, right now.

There's no salary cap or limit to opportunities for lawyers and nonlawyers in the field. Everyone is needed. There's an actual shortage of people who can do the job.

Had a healthcare privacy and security background before making the transition.

Did not want to become a lawyer but wanted legal training in privacy.

Yes. There are lots of operations roles in privacy, from analysts and managers on dedicated privacy or cyber teams to Trust and Safety roles. The best people in these roles can learn the law and only rely on counsel to verify their understanding or make the call on risk issues.

You will benefit from a cert but also from getting hands-on with privacy law and frameworks. Go read the entire ICO guide for organizations to get a complete rundown on GDPR. You can also take a look at EDPB guidance notes if you want to get even deeper. There are also newsletters and publications from law firms that discuss privacy developments.

The more you can talk about the real, practical issues in privacy and the legal implications, the better you stand out against candidates who just know how to do what they're told.

Absolutely you can. Being able to understand the tech side of privacy is a real edge that most lawyers in privacy do not have. I'd encourage you to get your CIPT as well as CIPP/E or CIPP/US. Whichever appeals to you more.

I’ve worked with dozens if not hundreds of companies and the two best CPOs I’ve worked with did not have legal degrees.

I happen to have a legal degree, but it’s by no means required.

Also don’t want to bite off more than I can chew, but would love to hear some tips or even better, maybe have a quick chat if willing?
