Can someone who has/had experience working in Alvarez & Marsal and any of the big 4 firms share your thoughts on the differences between them? Culture, performance evaluation, career progression, or anything else that comes to mind would be appreciated. Currently weighing the option of jumping ship vs. staying where I am. Pay will be higher if I jump over, but I’d have to rebuild my network and reputation in a new environment. Thanks!

Worked at 2 of the big 4 and then moved to A&M. Total no brainer and has accelerated career progression and earnings potential.

What about the 10%? Where to avoid?

Cutthroat environment at A&M….if you think you can deal with politics and win, go. If you prefer stability and a government type role, stay at big 4

likefunny

Not true at all. Much happier here.

like

Moved from big 4 to A&M last year. A&M is much more meritocratic and the work has been much more interesting. My work life balance has also been much better as A&M in general has skipped a lot of the performative bs work I did at big 4. That being said the work has been more difficult and my peers have been much more impressive.

like

Like other said. A&M is very different depending on practice but in general it has a very “roll up your sleeves” feel to it where hard work is very well rewarded

likehelpful

I would make sure you understand the following:
1. The difference in pay models - high variable versus high salary
2. How much you benefit from the brand and superstructure that a Big4 has
3. Your willingness to work in an environment where there is a lot less available to you
4. Your ability to hunt; it’s much more important than your ability to farm

I’ve worked at Big4 and boutiques prior to coming to A&M. Happy to chat if you want to DM

Decided that I’m leaving audit today. Trying to understand the full range of opportunities in forensics. Will have my CPA and CFE. So far, I understand that there are client-serving firms like FTI and then the B4 will have forensics arms as well. What are some other forensic accounting roles? Pros and cons? Better than audit? Honestly just looking to learn anything.

Thoughts on leaving PA primarily due to the metrics based culture (utilization, dtc, use of X digital tool, revenue, margin, etc). I find this aspect of PA stressful and exhausting but not sure if this is something you just get used to. Currently a manager and seems like the metrics just change over time / don’t get easier.

A week or so ago, someone shared a stacked bar chart of each MBB/Big 4 firm that highlighted the percentage of consultants that say they work 40, 50, 60 hours etc a week at each firm. I have searched endlessly to find that chart but haven’t had any luck. Not even on google. Does anyone know the chart I’m referring to?

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)
