No question Chicago

like

Chicago unless you want to step on used needles when you leave the office

I’ve lived in both. And I’m originally from SF. Multiple friends have moved to SF and left within 3 years. SF is terrible and it’s only a great tourist spot. Do yourself a lifetime solid and do not even touch that place. Go to Chicago

SF. Why would anyone want Chicago with those winters?

like

…. Why would anyone want to live in San Francisco. Period.

like

SF is so expensive but so heckin’ nice all year round🥲

like

I feel like there is more to do there too. At least outdoorsy stuff. Chicago May have it beat on city things.

like

SF is getting a tough wrap in this thread. I’ve lived in SF for 3 years. My family is from Chicago. There are obvious pros and cons to both. Pros to SF: more to do, good weather all year round, driving distance to some incredible places (tahoe, Yosemite, Napa). Cons: cost of living, homelessness. Chicago is obviously beautiful but the weather is awful. That being said, your money will get you much farther there. Feel free to PM me about my experience in SF. Full disclosure I hated it when I moved here. I love it here now and know when I do leave (I will because you can never afford to buy anything in the area) it will be very difficult.

like

I live in Chicago. San Fran is my vote.

The Bay Area is incredible but it takes time to love it. It took me about 2 years. I also lived in Chicago and instantly fell in love with the city. SF is generally chilly year round except a few weeks in the fall. Nothing beats a midwest fall. Really can’t go wrong in either but Chicago is easier to love in my opinion

like

If you’re in tech then you gotta go to the Bay Area.

like

Your money will go way father in Chicago but you’re trading horrific winters for relaxed California weather (even if it’s not SoCal idyllic) and a generally way better food city.

Notwithstanding what you said, this is also a bit practice group dependent. If you’re going to K&E to do PE M&A/funds or something similar, then that’s a different consideration than if you’re agnostic or want to do something like EC/VC, life sciences, cap markets, etc.

like

From Chicago and lived in SF for 3 years. The only additions I would add are that the weather really isn’t that great in SF and it’s harder to get around without a car. And I strongly preferred to take the UBE for Chicago over the CA bar exam

like

I’d take a steady 55-68 degrees over -30 in the winter!! But good point on the UBE versus Cal bar exam. That’s a huuuge plus for Chi.

Another vote for Chicago. People are really exaggerating about the weather. Winters in Northern Minnesota are horrific. Chicago has a few really cold days each winter, and very infrequent snowstorms. It's really not that big of a deal. Just work from home those days. The summer and fall are great.

like

Both cities are cool. I think it depends on practice group and which city has better market for what you’ll be doing. Money, especially big law salary, will go much further in Chicago in terms of rental/buying. I think both cities have good food scene, bars, etc. obviously Chicago has bit more of a mid west vibe but still urban, SF has Cali vibe but then you get the tech bro scene. Again depends what u do and if you want to buy a house one day.

And higher tax rates so take home pay would be lower. Drinks and food/general cost of living out there can also be a little on the higher end too so there could be other opportunity costs such as less savings for retirement or paying loans off slower or traveling less

But it ultimately depends on the experience you are seeking! Are you itching to live in one city or the other? Itching to move away or be closer? Have any family/friends there? Like one work team better than the other?

What type of law? If you're corporate, exit opps in SF are so much better in SF that it's no contest.

Plus wine country, plus Tahoe, plus not the Midwest.

Between the two, SF. But if you want to avoid bad weather and affordability issues raised here then Dallas or San Antonio.

Chicago over SF for affordability and overall quality of life. As someone who moved to Chicago from Texas and has considered SF/LA, I would still stick with Chicago. There’s much more to do in Chicago in terms of city stuff compared to SF and the housing is cheaper (while other costs are generally about the same between the two cities). SF beats Chicago in terms of outdoorsy things to do generally, but Chicago has a good abundance of outdoor activities during the spring-fall seasons, and Chicago is probably the best city to be in during the summer months imo. SF is near a lot of other nearby fun cities/attractions along the west coast, but Chicago is centrally located in the US so it’s easy/quick to fly anywhere across the US. Also if you’re going to a firm with cross office work and clients all over the US, Chicago is only 1 hr behind NYC and 2 hours ahead of SF/LA. I usually see my west cost team members waking up much earlier for central/east coast clients and then still working late for west coast clients (no thanks).

Texas might be more affordable and no state income tax but it’s extremely hot, and the bigger cities like Houston/Dallas/San Antonio/Austin tend to be more sleepy in terms of things to do compared to SF/Chicago, but it depends what on you’re looking for at the end of the day. FYI, I’m a young professional with a s/o.

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.
