Class of 2019. Missed my billable goal for bonus by literally 8 hours. However, I brought in $20k worth of business, got excellent reviews across the board in my Evals, and fully comply with the firms RTO policy (which they’ve been stressing hard.) however, despite all that I didn’t get any bonus. Should I be more pissed than I am?

You should be mad at yourself for missing by 8 hours

likesmart

A majority of ya’ll really suck. This place has been filling with ya’ll whinging on and on for the last six months about how slow everything is and how partners don’t have any more work to give out and now you’re all on here going after poor OP for missing target by ONLY 8 hours?!? Get out of here with that toxic bs.

OP, I’d be pissed. I’d go speak with someone about an exception. Even better if you know how many people in your practice area actually hit target, any non-billable work you did for the firm, and/or if you can show you were asking for work and there just wasn’t any. Good luck.

likesmarthelpful

Agree but at the same time I’m an associate who has been checking daily for 3+ months to make sure I am going to hit the target this year, and calculating what I need to bill each month. It’s the name of the game, and the expectations are very clear year to year. If I thought I was going to fall short then I would reach out to pro bono or let the partners know the situation BEFORE the billing year closes. At a big law firm, there is no one to blame here except OP

Wow this is ridiculous. Would look to lateral if this were me (unless it’s a *really* top notch firm, but doubt a really top notch firm would do this).

like

that’s why if i miss the billable goal, i REALLY miss goal. if i’m not going to get the bonus anyway..

likefunny

Be satisfied and stay or be pissed and leave. Those are your choices. If you leave, the law firm will have to replace you and retrain the new person. Headhunter’s fees and ramp-up time will eclipse that $20k. (Don’t bother making that argument — it fails every time.)

The reality is that you’re already making more than 99% of American workers. Lawyers are among the most despicable people I’ve ever met — you’ll get nowhere with rational arguments. The relevant questions are: (1) are you otherwise happy at this firm, and (2) are you getting good training? Question (1) goes to the present; question (2) goes to the future.

I’ve been a lawyer for 40 years and I can guarantee you that the one thing that will never happen is that your law firm partners will become decent, honorable and reliable people.

like

My firm would give you an exception for this but you generally will have an easier time if you raise it in advance

like

I’d be pissed, but if you didn’t make hours you didn’t make hours.

like

Yup. They suck. 8 hours considering everything else you did is meaningless to them.

like

Like others, our firm has a hard rule. To get a bonus you have to hit the minimum billable requirement to be eligible. Sometimes people fall slightly short and don’t get a bonus, and a lot more offer associates just make it and get a bonus. The rules are clear.

like

Agree with everyone here who argues you should be more upset. If there gonna cheap out on you because of 8 hours, I'd take the next opportunity to leave when the economy gets better

like

What do you have to be mad about? There was a clear expectation you didn’t meet.

like

Yikes dude

I'd look for a new firm and take the new business with you. That firm isn't looking out for you. It's rare to find a good firm but most places are mills.

like

Companies don’t want to pay bonuses at all. And they know Associates don’t last long so there’s no incentive for them.

I remember being in a similar situation when I realized that some of the billable credit hours didn’t end up being counted towards my bonus. One of the partners I work closely with advocated hard to make an exception. Perhaps you may try to go that route. Honestly it would have been much more feasible if it was last year. This year could be different.

This year — probably take it on the chin. If this was last year though I would have said get a lateral offer with a signing bonus and then talk to your firm.

Yeah be pissed.

Also, what is everyone’s billing requirements? Mine as a paralegal is 1650!

Trying to see somthing.

I’d be pissed and looking for a new firm that values me.

Speak up and raise the points you outline above to the partner in charge of your group so s/he can advocate on your behalf. You deserve something especially since you were so close

I would request to see how many of your billable hours were billed and collected. If your realization was better than the firm average, I would ask that the firm reconsider.

Sorry to hear that!

I hate the bright lines. How pissed you should be is a function of how clear they’ve been about them.
