Do not go to the client first. Go to the MD. Nothing worse than an MD hearing from the client that you are interested in a client role.
Thought the same. Thx.
Umm I disagree. If you tell your MD, won’t that be sending a message that you want to leave? If this were me, I would tell the client to keep this quiet and if it works out, tell the MD myself.
Yes it will be however it gives the opportunity for the MD to have a conversation about career and options. It may even prompt the MD to support the move so they can help them get the job. The client will not keep this quiet.
I have a pretty strong relationship with the manager on this project (who interfaces with the MD much more than I do) and they advised I remain up front about it. Personally not comfortable with the sneaking around element, could get messy. Plus I think it’s fairly common for most analysts to be exploring exits after their 2 year mark, so not really a surprise and could be beneficial for the firm.
OP, if you tell the MD and the MD passes the resume along... And the client rejects it. What will that do for your image to your MD, manager etc?
I’m going through my manager. Want to keep everything above board. Not worried about my rep as I am a fairly strong performer and have built a strong brand in my group. Thanks all for the input
Have the M share your thoughts with the MD. The MD might have to waive a no-hire clause to protect the client and the firm. I've never heard of it being blocked, but clear communication is critical.
Exactly the route I’m taking, thank you for responding.
