Client offered 2x my salary to join. I'm a very new consultant. How do I handle this without losing both jobs?

OP, I dealt with a similar situation. It can get very political very quickly. I would NOT tell your managers/directors/etc even if you don't plan to take it. I did that feeling like it was my duty and it made everything weird for a while. If they give you the paper offer AND you for sure want to accept, then you should tell your team and work out a transition.

like

OP: D will Buckley because at the end of the day it’s a client - and you will eventually be an influencer for D. Accept the written offer, and then let your SM or PPD know right away. Make it about travel/stability or something else and only incidentally about compensation

2x that much? So from like 80k to 160k??

like

what city is the client in and what city are you currently in?

like

How are they paying you that much with zero experience? Take it!

like

Also came in with a graduate degree

like

Firm will always put the firm before you, get that offer on paper and sign asap.

like

OP, I am very curious as a new consultant myself how you were able to stand out to the client to that degree! Very impressive.

like

OP never asked whether he should take it or not, his question was on how to navigate this situation without effing it up.

like

Need more deets. What role is it

like

I told D several months ago they were interested in me, but from here on out I'm going to let the client handle it. I'll be letting them know I'm interested but need something more formal before I'm open about the situation

like

Get that shit on paper and run with it!

like

OP, to reiterate you’d be an idiot to not take this. Get it in writing and accept then tell Deloitte

like

Take it and bail!

Similar thing happened to me. But fortunately at that time, my director was very positive and motivating to take the gig.

I had kept him in the loop and he handled things on the firms side.

Thats said, not every manager/director is like that.

I think you have things under control for now.. so congratulations if it does come through 😁

like

Similar situation happened with me — working with client who poached me after a year on the project. Salary’s jumping about 75%. Unreal opportunity. I’m already 2+ years into consulting so it was practically a no brainer. Take it OP!!

My view is don’t take the job for money. Money will come - which opportunity presents the best future. With the industry job, can you see yourself being there 5 years from now or what new things are you going to learn. Personally, I would tell the company I am interested, but still considering if staying in Consulting is a better move, so while you want an actual offer, you want a little time to think about it. When you get the offer, go back to D and tell them you are seriously considering taking the job. Mention other reasons along side money to D. Then:
A. If you would really rather stay with D career wise, see if they can increase your salary. If you are as good as you say, they will give you a raise.
B. If you are not that wild about Consulting anyway, then graciously accept the offer, but really thank D along the way and leave the door open that perhaps you will regret it and maybe come back some day.
If you are not sneaky about any of this, you really shouldn’t burn a bridge. The key is giving yourself outs along the way Best of luck.

Don’t listen to SC3. No consulting firm double your salary to match a competing offer, unless you are near partner level. Even with a raise you’d be stuck at the salary band cap for your level and get screwed over next year for raises.

like

Exactly. None of our companies want to piss off our clients by barring people from making the jump.

like

Agree with EY1.

like

@sc2 not saying they would double the salary to match exactly, but they might move it and it would then allow the person to balance the decision a little better to which option gives them a better future and which seems like a better place to work (vs. strictly based on money)

like

SC2, it's never about just the money. SC3 gave sound advice. Additionally, not being sneaky safeguards against being legally blocked from going to client. D will likely want to at least get some payment for having spent time and energy recruiting and matching D Ops for the client to know about him in the 1st place. I've seen people lose jobs and blocked for trying to circumvent client having to pay fee to the employer consulting firm

like

Don’t listen to these idiots babble about the non compete. It’s unenforceable in most states and even if it were your company would not want to piss off their current client and you, a future client. Noncompetes only come into play when a higher level employee or partner joins a competitor

I have 3 YOE in customer success but pivoted to a non technical program manager role at a series c tech startup last September. I have been getting consistently positive feedback at quarterly reviews. What raise should I aim for?

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Hi Editors!
What did your transition from AE to editor look like?

5 months ago I joined an advertising post house as a full-time AE. Through the support of a lead editor at the company I found my way into making cuts for the company’s most prestigious client. At this point, I’ve been the sole editor of one global campaign and a co-editor of another, in addition to cutting many social media videos. It’s only 5 months but I can’t help feel that my title doesn’t reflect the work I actually do.
