How do you deal with seniors who want to talk through everything when you're better with written communication? I send follow up summary emails to confirm but they go ignored. Any other suggestions?

It would be incredibly annoying to get detailed emails summarizing everything I ask my team members to do. Take good notes and recap your to do's briefly before ending conversations with your senior.

like

Guys I'm not trying to change them! (I would if I could but..) I'm just trying to ask how I MYSELF can make sure we're both on the same page. We've had a lot of miscommunications

like

I've been in this situation and completely agree with Manager 1! Take the opportunity when you're ending your face-to-face conversation to say, "okay, I'm going to get started on X and Y and check to see if we have what we need for Z", alternatively, recap specific instructions "I'll pull in document X, format it to match document Y, then tie that out to document Z". You might find you still have miscommunications, but at that point you can refer back to what they confirmed when you spoke. I've worked with seniors before who: forget what they've asked me to do; instruct me to do something the wrong way; or are horrible at communicating and/or don't actually know what to ask me to do and just generally want me to figure it out without giving proper instruction. There's no winning in these types of interactions and it's incredibly frustrating! Just hang in there, get the work done as best you can ...and then quietly request that scheduling avoid pairing you up 😐 Good luck!

like

Always repeat back to that person what you heard from them. It sounds dumb but they're saying one thing and you're hearing another. Or they're not saying something and assumed you know what they're thinking. If you generally work well with most people you're probably working with a poor communicator.

like

Generally your boss gets to decide how they want to communicate with you. Not the other way around. Do you or your senior speak English as a second language?

like

A great boss/leader knows their staff and can change his style but those are hard to come by

This is the most unsuccessful post I've ever posted 😞

Take notes

like

OP Sadly, yes staff do it all the time and it’s a nightmare because you end up just repeating what the task was multiple time. Personally, I prefer summary emails to and from staff that helps to manage what is and isn’t being done. That being said, I like my staff to me through things they’ve done, especially if it was complex. Or, if I think it’s wrong, it’s a great teaching opportunity.

like

OP GROW UP. They are not your parents and they do not have obligations to put in writing for things you need do. God did not have a checklist for you after you were born neither. This is a harsh comment I know but I hope you get it.

like

OP, you need to learn to flex! This is something you start to develop after a year plus with the firm. Senior wants to talk through everything so at the end of each discussion, summarize next steps in detail like you would in an email but verbal. If it's all good and you have a miscommunication, sit down with the senior after and go over your notes/summary of next steps and talk about why you didn't do AB or C from a factual perspective. Aka don't get defensive. This way you're actually coaching the senior on how to improve his/her communication styles in a discrete way. So"when you said do Y, I thought that meant blah blah blah and I didn't realize you also meant X".

like

Nope. I'm not asking how to change their communication style, I'm asking what I can do to close the gap

like

Learn how to talk to people. Coaching only through email and gchat is terrible!!!!

like

Summary emails.. not detailed novels.. summaries

like

Duh 😂 haha sorry but does anyone NOT take notes when they meet with someone?

like

You sound like a staff that asks dumb questions.

like

OP ignore all the people that are giving you crap on here. You have a legit question and it should be answered. I agree what others have said to recap back what you've gone over w the senior. A senior taught me also that when you start a task get a small example of it done and show to senior to make sure you're on the right track. Make sure you're having daily touch points, especially if remote, so you can ask any questions.

like

Why don't you like talking? Me personally is because I'm a foreigner and people never understand me but practice and forcing myself to do it has improved my communication skills soooooo much.

like

It's not that I don't like talking, it's just that there has been miscommunication. I've never had this issue with anyone else, so I can only assume it's primarily because we do most communicating face to face. But now that I think about it, I realize there are other teams that I communicate with solely face to face, so maybe that's not the underlying issue

In small companies (especially startups), where HR may not really exist or the HR person may be the main violator, how do you deal with inappropriate behavior. If a person has been there a long time and is "too important to fire" how do you handle them?

At a startup I left because of this, my boss had been there since day 1. He was a nightmare. The last straw was when he took out his anger at a home issue on me and made fun of me for being upset. HR told me they couldn't do anything about him.

A coworker asked me to do something, I should have questioned it but did it because I trusted their seniority. I got called out for it by our boss on an email. Should I say something? I am planning to apologize to my boss and mention I’ll run it by them next time. But not sure if I should mention I had checked with my coworker who was in charge of that area.

Boss: I need you to stop challenging me on every decision.

Me: I don’t want us to have a confrontational relationship and I think we can agree something needs to change. When you make stupid decisions, that affects my business and it makes me feel like you’re not up to the job. That makes it harder for my team to do our jobs. I think to be an authentic leader I need to be radically candid with you and point our your mistakes. So are you willing to work with me on this?

Check me here: other side attorney has already reached out to me directly via email saying that an LOI is coming… Then, she sends the LOI addressed to my client, and CC:s me only. My manager scheduled a feedback conversation and I know it's bc I've made some noticeable mistakes lately due to moving too fast, not being able to focus, racing thoughts, etc. I'm seeing a therapist about whether I have ADHD and if so, what tx looks like; we started the intake process which will be continued in my 2nd appointment, which is after the feedback convo meeting. Is it worth telling my mgr something eg I recognize the careless mistakes and I'm in the process of seeing tx to help?

I've been working at this company for about 3.5 weeks now. Its been great so far.

We have an org chart in our dashboard ATS/HRIS and so I clicked on my first day buddies name just for fun.

I was able to see her entire employee file..even her address. I was really freaked out and I went to another profile and the same thing happened, I was able to see this person's emergency contact. Is this fucking normal? Should I say something and will I get in trouble for looking at a colleagues file?

I could use some advice on this situation. I’ve been working for a small family owned business in Toronto Canada for about 4months. I’ve noticed a lot of unprofessional behaviour since I’ve started (yelling at workers infront of customers) I’ve bounced around different positions so much that the owner blames 98% of stuff on me when something isn’t done, even if it’s not my responsibility anymore.A week ago I asked for an employment contract to get this straight but nothing yet. What do I do?

Things have been super stressful at work lately for a variety of reasons & a couple of weeks ago I decided to raise the issues with my Creative Director.
For context, he’s the reason for a lot of these problems and I (tactfully, I think) said as much. He listened to me patiently but took no responsibility and deflected blame with every issue raised.
Today he asked me to send an email to him about how overworked I am so that he can use it to talk to management. (cont. in comments)

How often do you respond to emails from law students who want to learn about your firm/practice area? I get like a dozen requests right around OCI every year. Frankly I’m tired of speaking to them and answering the same boring questions, especially if I know they have a low GPA and no chance of summering at my firm, but I do feel bad saying no/ignoring them
