Converted my summer at a low/mid BB in the ECM team, however now been offered an analyst role at a MM PE firm (~$1bn AUM). Although my team at the BB is far from prestigious I’m just looking to hear some other opinions before I accept the PE offer, one thing catching me off guard is that most of the IP come from non-MBB consulting backgrounds so I’m wondering if this is really a good exit. I’d be taking about a 10% pay cut compared to IB but progression to roles with carry is open.

I was a pretty senior guy at my last role when I took this long term internship. To me the cut in pay and seniority was worth the move to an industry and role I was passionate about. I have friends in MBB and friends in Big 4, and I’ve seen zero delta between them in terms of drive and intelligence. I bet you’ll learn a lot if you make the jump. But it’s your life.

I don’t know what CDDs you have been seeing A1, but all non MBB CDDs I have seen were terrible, even if the subject matter was always much easier (eg agriculture vs some random tech niche market). And I’ve done a few myself.

Yeah I think if they’re on the buy side the difference between MBB and big 4 starts to become negligible, especially considering they likely edged out MBB applicants to get to that buy side position. If the fund seems successful and you have liked the team, I’d say you should do it. Your day to day won’t be determined by someone’s MBB tenure

Red flag when the interviewers all say how busy the group is? I mean, isn’t that the point of hiring? But if I get an offer I don’t want to show up and be absolutely destroyed with work. I can’t get a feel if it’s humanely busy or inhumanely busy. If I get an offer, is there a way to diplomatically probe this further? Current associates have been there awhile which I took as a goodish sign.

I need an opinion. I've been considering changing my H-1B to F-1. Reason being that my current job is taking an immense toll on my health. I don't think taking a leave of absence would help since I now fundamentally just don't agree with the career and feel hopeless. My exit opportunities are very limited because it'd likely be a job of the same nature as the one I have. I'd be hard, but I'm willing to go back to school to study something else and try a different career. Is this doable?

A tech firm reached out, and I had a 30-min call with a CD. Went well and I agreed to more interviews. Turns out the next round is a “4-hour panel WebEx interview”. Their creative dept isn’t well established, so is it wrong for me to politely say “4 hours is a big investment, can we briefly chat about salary range, title, etc”? I kinda don’t want to go down this road for a lateral title and who-knows-what salary. If it was a better-known in-house shop, I’d go with the flow.
