I was in advertising before business school / consulting. Pay is horrible comparatively, usually you have to switch companies to get promoted and the hours can be about the same. Plus dealing with creatives and entitled marketing clients is way worse than any PE or corporate clients I’ve had at LEK and there’s no guarantee anyone on your team will be smart or capable compared to consulting. Even if you end up at a brand consultancy, you’ll just be an underpaid consultant.
And bad WLB
There was a brand consulting firm that reached out recently- with an Engagement Manager position and at 40% raise.
Which firm?
Ad sales can pay quite well. Friend makes 300/yr. never works >40k per week. All of the TV networks, digital media companies have these roles. You don’t lateral into that level but you could enter around $125k and work up to it in ~3 years. My sense is that pay tops out around 400k if you’re good and have been in it a while.
